Newsletter – June 2015

Hearts in Union would like to thank you for your support and interest in our work. Each year, Hearts in Union provides valuable support and assistance to a range of people who have tragically suffered severe and permanent spinal injuries through a freak accident while playing rugby.

The Waratahs recently held their 2015 Charity Jersey Auction and raised an amazing $16,000! $8,000 was generously donated to Hearts in Union and $8,000 given to the Trytons – a grassroots development program that provides children with disabilities an opportunity to participate in the great game of rugby.

A presentation was held at the Waratahs vs Sharks game on Saturday, 16 May.

Brumbies Rugby & Hearts in Union

Brumbies Rugby also chose Hearts in Union to be an official Match Day Charity Partner in 2015.

The charity was thrilled to be assigned the Brumbies v Rebels match on Saturday, 18 April as our official match day and we were delighted to receive support, acknowledge and promotion of our cause during the game.

A few of our beneficiaries & Ambassadors were able to attend the game as guests of the brumbies and were shown fantastic hospitality on the night.

Charity Golf Day 2015

hearts in union charity golf day 2015

The 2015 “Uncle Evan Fraser” Charity Challenge Golf Day in conjunction with the “Shawn Mackay Perpetual Trophy” was a great success, with teams competing on Friday, 6 March 2015 at St Michael’s Golf Club in Sydney. A fantastic total of just over $25,000 was raised on the day!

Congratulations to the TPG Telecom team captained by Mark Rafferty for winning the Shawn Mackay Trophy and Eastwood Rugby Club for winning the Hearts in Union Trophy!

A very big thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the Golf Day such a success. Many thanks as well to the Classic Wallabies and all the former Wallabies who played this year including, John Eales, Simon Poidevin, Matt Burke, Stirling Mortlock, Mick Martin , James Black, Julian Huxley & Peter Falk & many others.

Thanks also to the former Welsh rugby international, Ben Evans and the Waverley Rugby boys for the club’s support, and particularly Heath Donald and Via IP!

Of course the Golf Day could not happen without the work of Gary ‘Smokey’ Dawson at Bullant Sports and Matthew Laverty.

In even better news, the Macquarie Group Foundation has generously agreed to match the funds raised athe 2015 Golf Day. Their funds will go directly towards one of the Charity’s exciting new projects – supporting Necksafe training programmes, which train people likely to be firt at the scene of an injury on a rugby field.

 Laffo’s Long Lunch – Friday 19 June 2015

The 7th Annual Laffo’s Long Lunch is a fantastic event that Hearts in Union is involved with in the true spirit of rugby. The late Matt Laffan was a great rugby man through and through!

Some proceeds from table sales and auction items will go to the charity – so if you are interested and book a table, please mention that you are booking as a friend of Hearts in Union so the charity will receive a donation.

 Sporting Legends Lunch

Our friends at the Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation are hosting the 2nd Annual Sporting Legends Lunch in Sydney on Friday 26 June & also in Brisbane on Friday 19 June 2015.

Both lunches will feature a host of rugby & other popular sporting stars & special guests.

The Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation is a fantastic organisation that raises funds for key medical research that aims to find a cure for paralysis.

While Hearts in Union has no official ties with the Perry Cross Foundation, they have generously offered to make a donation to the charity from funds raised at the Sporting Legends Lunch.

See below for full details and how to book your tickets. For more information please contact the Perry Cross Foundation
